About Supergrans

Supergrans is a community organisation which has now been in operation in Christchurch since 1996. We are a fully registered Charitable Trust under the governance of the Home Made Partnerships Trust.

Our objective is to provide free practical tuition and mentoring to anyone who needs a little help to learn more about household management, practical cooking, financial management and other basic life skills.

Our goal is to enable others to make the most of the resources and finances available to them, by giving guidance and tuition that gives people confidence and skills that are of practical value in the home.

Some of the areas that we can support people in are

Household Management and Budgeting

  • Menu planning
  • Nutrition
  • Budget shopping
  • Growing vegetables
  • Healthy, economical cooking
  • Time management and housekeeping skills
  • Tuition in clothing repairs
  • First steps in sewing skills.
  • A wide variety of craft skills
  • Advocacy with government departments and other agencies
  • Financial budgeting

We operate on three distinct levels

  • Our ‘in home’ mentoring programme
  • Group courses from our Learning Base
  • Cooking and Budgeting courses that we take out to other organisations/agencies (both government and non government) throughout Christchurch.
  • Although based on the east side of the city and our clientele are predominantly from these suburbs, we work with clients metropolitan wide.

We have government contracts with

  • Ministry of Social Development/Family & Community Services
  • Christchurch City Council
  • The Tertiary Education Commission

The rest of our funds we raise ourselves.

We receive two audits every year

  • Child, Youth & Family and New Zealand Qualifications Authority
  • We are registered with the Charities Commission: CC10058

We have also in the past five years set up a community garden at the back of our premises. Here we grow a significant variety of vegetables that we give to people in the community at no charge. We also use the vegetables in our cooking classes and our volunteers can take them to use with clients they are mentoring in cooking programmes. Any surpluses are offered to the local foodbank or any other community organisations who can use them.
